About the Program

COMPASS responds to youth whose histories of serious psychiatric and /or emotional challenges have interfered with their ability to function within mainstream educational settings. The program promotes active partnership and meaningful engagement between families and service providers to support student growth and positive action plans.

Skill Building and Goal Setting

COMPASS offers a phased sequential approach to treatment. COMPASS focuses on self-esteem and adaptive skill building. Treatment is individualized, and youth are partners in developing and evaluating their goal-oriented treatment plans. This is done with clinicians and their parents, if appropriate.

Educational strategies, based on academic strengths, weaknesses, and performance levels are developed and implemented for each student. Clinical support is offered through various evidence-informed practice programs, integrated into the weekly program model.


Students are referred to the COMPASS Secondary Program through Access & System Navigation (ASN) in conjunction with their Board of Education.

Referrals to the program indicate that less intrusive interventions have been exhausted, or that the treatment needs of the student are such that a referral to the COMPASS Secondary Program is the most appropriate option.

Integrated Treatment

The COMPASS Secondary Program provides an integrated treatment and educational service for 16 students between the ages of 13 and 17. The program delivers group and individualized programming during the summer months. Pre-admission and post-discharge transitioning support is available.

A major emphasis is the establishment and maintenance of linkages with community schools, the development of strategic and phased re-entry plans, and consultative support to school staff upon the student’s transition back into school.

Clincal Resources

The team can call on an array of clinical resources, including a Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner, Occupational Therapist, FASD consultant, Clinical Assessments and Measures, and Complex Needs consultant.
